Introduction

Café del Lago, as our name suggests, is conveniently located at the entrance to Puerto Fuy’s ferry port on Lake Pirihueico. We offer a variety of delicious, carefully selected treats from hot “cazuela” (soup) to cool refreshing beverages, depending on the season. We are a business founded, organized, and run by women — we have received support and funding from various sources, including Capital Abeja, a fund specifically designed to promote budding female entrepreneurs. We hope to see you soon, and make your visit to the stunning Puerto Fuy even more magical.

Our Story

In 1996, during very high levels of unemployment, we were inspired to start a business: we wanted to create a source of stable income for ourselves, while also providing for the community and the increasing number of hungry tourists. As women, most of us have not had the opportunity to be formally employed in the past. Our group of founders consisted of 12 women, all above the age of 50, who are still involved to this day.

We originally planned to create a bakery, but saw that there was a greater need for more substantial food services. By 1998, we had garnered support from the governor to establish our first location in the community center of Puerto Fuy. Here, we offered a selection of empanadas, hot dogs, sandwiches, and french fries to our customers. We have since expanded our menu to include many more options. Also in 1998, we received funding and training opportunities from other sources, such as La Fundación para la Promoción y Desarollo de la Mujer (PRODEMU). This prompted us to purchase new equipment and create our reserve fund to help establish ourselves in the market. In 2013, we received funding from Sercotec, which runs the Capital Abeja fund. This grant is designed to support female entrepreneurs in their efforts to improve and expand their businesses. Throughout our history, the Huilo Huilo Foundation and Ivonne Reifschneider have also contributed significantly to our efforts.

During the busiest times of the year, especially during the summer, we like to give back to Puerto Fuy by opening positions in cooking, cleaning, and other jobs to community members.
